Baroque & Modern Flute Teacher
Yat-ho is a freelance baroque and modern flutist and photographer based in Hong Kong.
Yat-ho studied Baroque Flute (Traverso) performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (CvA) with Marten Root, principal flute in the Netherlands Bach Society Orchestra (De Nederlandse Bachvereniging), John Eliot Gardiner's Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique and The English Baroque Soloists. Before his study in traverso, Yat-ho studied Modern Flute performance at the same institution with Harrie Starreveld, leading specialist in contemporary flute music, flutist of Nieuw Ensemble and Het Trio, and with Izaskun Erdocia Uranga, former principal flute of Hong Kong Sinfonietta, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).
Being one of the first professional traverso players from Hong Kong, Yat-ho's interest in historically informed performance developed since his study in CUHK. As there was no traverso teacher available in Hong Kong, Yat-ho received his first traverso lesson in Amsterdam. He has worked as a traverso player in the Netherlands and Hong Kong with the Sweelinck Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Sigiswald Kuijken, Menno van Delft and Teunis van der Zwart; the Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht under the direction of Johannes Leertouwer; ’t Kabinet, the baroque ensemble of the Amsterdam Western Church (Westerkerk) and Early Music Society of Hong Kong.
Performing as a modern flutist, Yat-ho was principal flute of and appeared as a soloist with the Chung Chi Orchestra during his study at CUHK. In 2012, he joined the Dutch National Student Orchestra and toured around the Netherlands and Rome under the baton of Lucas Vis. With his ongoing interest in contemporary music, Yat-ho has collaborated in and performed new works by young composers with members of Nieuw Ensemble and Atlas Ensemble.
